Remembering a Pet in November

Quiet ways to remember a pet you have lost this November, from a candle to a printed card to a few written words.

Guide ·

If you are missing a pet this month, you are not alone in it. The house is quieter. A spot on the floor stays empty. As the days shorten, the missing can feel louder. Nothing in this article has to be done. Take what helps and leave the rest.

Why November feels like a time to remember

All Souls Day falls on November 2. It is a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed, and many Christians keep it by praying for the dead, visiting graves and lighting candles. Many families carry that into the whole month, naming the people they miss and setting out their photos.

To be plain about it, the day itself is about people. Its prayers are written for the faithful departed, and we cannot tell you what any church teaches about animals. That is a question for your own priest or pastor. What we do know is that grief for a pet is real, and that November, with its candles and its habit of saying names out loud, gives many people a gentle reason to remember a pet too.

Four quiet ways to remember

Light a candle in their name. A candle on Heartleigh is an act of remembering. We light a virtual candle in your pet's name and keep it lit for a year, on a page of its own where family and friends can light one beside it, free. You choose what is said over it: a Christian prayer, a blessing with no particular faith, or a reading with their name spoken. We do not promise any outcome, because nobody honest can. It starts at $5 and is charged once, with no subscription. When you are ready, you can light a candle for your pet.

When our candle room is on air, the candle form also offers a box to have their name read aloud. We read your words first, and then they may be read aloud and shown on the stream with a first name only. The reading voice is AI generated. Anything else you ask us to say stays private.

Make a memorial card. Put their name, their years and a few words on a card you can print or download. The memorial card maker is free, there is nothing to sign up for, and a photo you add stays on your device. It makes a good card to tuck into a frame, send to a friend who loved them too, or leave beside a candle. You can make a memorial card in a few minutes.

Write a few lines. Writing helps many people, even when it is only a sentence. Our support page has six journaling prompts, such as "What did an ordinary morning with them look like?" and "What is one habit of theirs that still makes you laugh?" Take them one at a time, in any order.

If you would like a book to keep it in, the Pet Memory Journal has 150 lined pages with their photo around the cover, and no prompts or stages to work through.

Do something small at home. Put their photo where you will see it. Say their name out loud. Walk their favorite route, or plant something in the spot where they liked to lie in the sun. A memory box with a collar or a favorite toy is another gentle idea. None of this needs to be marked on a calendar. Any evening in November will do.

If this month feels heavy

We are not counselors, and nothing here is advice about how you should grieve. If the weight is more than you want to carry alone, our pet loss support page lists free support groups led by people trained in pet loss grief, along with helplines you can call. We do not run a group ourselves, and we are not affiliated with the ones we list.

Questions people ask

Can I remember my pet on All Souls Day? Yes. You do not need anyone's permission to remember an animal you loved. All Souls Day is a day of prayer for the faithful departed, and what it means for animals is a question for your own faith community. You can light a candle, write their name or sit with their photo on any day of the month.

What does lighting a candle for my pet actually do? It is an act of remembering. The candle is lit in their name for a year, shown on a page of its own, and said over with the prayer, blessing or reading you chose. It does not promise any result, and we would not want it to.

Is the memorial card really free? Yes. You can make, download and print as many cards as you like. A small heartleigh.com appears at the bottom of the card, and that is all.
