Sts Pontian and Hippolytus, Martyrs
1 candle lit
Pontian was pope from 230. Hippolytus was a Roman priest who had opposed him and earlier popes as the leader of a rival group. In 235 the emperor Maximinus sent both men to the mines of Sardinia. There they were reconciled, and Hippolytus urged his followers to return to the Church. Pontian resigned on September 28, 235, and both died in Sardinia as martyrs. Their bodies were brought back to Rome and buried on the same day, August 13. Their feast is August 13. Light a free candle for peace within the Church. Sts Pontian and Hippolytus, pray for us.
