Sts Nereus and Achilleus, Roman martyrs
1 candle lit
Sts Nereus and Achilleus were Roman martyrs of the early Church. The oldest record of them is an inscription by Pope Damasus in the fourth century. It says they were soldiers who became Christians, gave up their posts and died as martyrs. They are buried in the catacomb of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, and a basilica was built over their grave in the late fourth century. Later stories of their martyrdom are legend. Their feast is May 12. Light a free candle for anyone who has paid a price for their faith. Sts Nereus and Achilleus, pray for us.
