Sts Joachim and Anne, Grandparents of Jesus

1 candle lit

Joachim and Anne are honoured as the parents of the Virgin Mary and so the grandparents of Jesus. Scripture does not name them. Their names come from a legendary writing composed more than a century after Jesus, and nothing else about their lives is known for certain. The Church remembers them as a sign of the quiet, faithful families who prepared the way for the Messiah, and calls their day the feast of grandparents. Their feast is July 26. Light a free candle for grandparents and for families across the generations. Sts Joachim and Anne, pray for us.
