Sts Cyril and Methodius, Apostles of the Slavs
1 candle lit
Cyril (about 827 to 869) and his older brother Methodius (about 815 to 884) were Greek brothers who took the Gospel to the Slavic peoples of Moravia. Cyril devised an alphabet for the Slavs, and together they translated the Gospels, the psalms and the liturgy into Slavonic. Cyril died in Rome as a monk, and Methodius died among his disciples in his cathedral. In 1980 Pope John Paul II named them co-patrons of Europe. Their feast is February 14. Light a free candle for translators and teachers. Sts Cyril and Methodius, pray for us.
