Sts Cosmas and Damian, Physicians and Martyrs
1 candle lit
Cosmas and Damian were brothers, perhaps twins, who practised as physicians in the early centuries of the Church. Tradition says they were born in Arabia and healed people in Cilicia. They refused payment for their care, and for that they were called the silverless ones. They were put to death in the persecution under the emperor Diocletian, and the Church honours them as patrons of physicians and surgeons. Their feast is September 26. Light a free candle for doctors, nurses and the sick. Sts Cosmas and Damian, pray for us.
