Sts Cornelius and Cyprian, Martyrs
1 candle lit
Cornelius became bishop of Rome in 251, more than a year after Pope Fabian was put to death. Cyprian, a wealthy orator who gave much to the poor after his baptism, became bishop of Carthage around 248. Cyprian stood by Cornelius against a rival claimant, and both favored readmitting Christians who had lapsed under persecution, after penance. Cornelius died in exile, honoured as a martyr, and Cyprian was beheaded in 258. Their feast is September 16. Light a free candle for unity in the Church. Sts Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for us.
