Sts Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen
1 candle lit
Basil the Great (329 to 379) was bishop of Caesarea, in what is now Turkey. He founded a monastery, wrote principles that still shape Eastern monks, and built a hospital for the poor that was called a wonder of the world. His friend Gregory of Nazianzus (about 325 to 390) was a poet and preacher, honoured as "the Theologian" for his sermons on the Trinity in Constantinople. Their friendship had hard seasons too. Their feast is January 2. Light a free candle for an old friend. Sts Basil and Gregory, pray for us.
