St Wenceslaus, Duke of Bohemia
1 candle lit
Wenceslaus was a duke of Bohemia, in today's Czech Republic, brought up in the faith by his grandmother, St Ludmila. He ruled in the early tenth century and supported the Church. His brother Boleslav, who wanted power, had him killed on his way to Mass, around the year 929, though some sources say 935. He is the patron saint of the Czech Republic, and the Christmas carol Good King Wenceslas remembers him. His feast is September 28. Light a free candle for the Czech people and for rulers who govern justly. St Wenceslaus, pray for us.
