St Vincent of Saragossa, Deacon and Martyr
1 candle lit
Vincent was a deacon in Saragossa in Spain, ordained by his friend Bishop Valerius, and he died around the year 304. In the persecution under Diocletian, the governor Dacian had Vincent and Valerius taken to Valencia, where Valerius was banished. Vincent refused to give up the sacred books and held to his faith through great suffering. Tradition says he won over his jailer. Saint Augustine preached about him, and devotion to him spread widely. His feast is January 22. Light a free candle for anyone keeping faith in a hard season. St Vincent, pray for us.
