St Vincent de Paul, Priest of Charity
1 candle lit
Vincent was born in 1580 on a small farm in Gascony, France, and became a priest with little ambition beyond a comfortable life. A dying servant's confession opened his eyes to the needs of the country poor, and he gave his life to them. He led a band of missionaries, now called the Vincentians, and with St Louise de Marillac he formed the Daughters of Charity. He ransomed over 1,200 galley slaves and died in 1660. His feast is September 27. Light a free candle for the poor and for those who serve them. St Vincent de Paul, pray for us.
