St Turibius of Mogrovejo, Archbishop of Lima

Turibius was born in Spain in 1538, trained in law and taught at the University of Salamanca. Though still a layman, and objecting, he was made archbishop of Lima in Peru, and served there 26 years after being ordained. He spoke out against the abuse of Indigenous people and saw to catechisms in Quechua and Aymara. He confirmed St Rose of Lima and helped the poor in secret so they would not be shamed. He died in 1606. His feast is March 23. Light a free candle for anyone far from home who serves others. St Turibius, pray for us.
