1 candle lit
Thomas Becket was born in 1118 and became Archbishop of Canterbury. He stood up to King Henry II over the rights of the Church. He briefly approved the Constitutions of Clarendon, then rejected them, fled to France and spent seven years in exile. He was killed in Canterbury Cathedral on 29 December 1170 and is honoured as a martyr. He is a patron of Roman Catholic diocesan clergy. His feast is December 29. Light a free candle for priests and for all who stand by their conscience. St Thomas, pray for us.
