Edith Stein was born in 1891 into a Jewish family in Breslau and became a philosopher who studied under Edmund Husserl. After reading the life of St Teresa of Avila, she became a Catholic and was baptised on New Year's Day 1922. In 1933 she entered the Carmelites in Cologne and took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She was arrested in 1942 and died at Auschwitz on August 9 with her sister. Pope John Paul II canonised her in 1998. Her feast is August 9. Light a free candle for those who search for truth. St Teresa Benedicta, pray for us.
