Sylvester led the Church as pope from 314 until his death in 335, in the age of Emperor Constantine. In those years came the Edict of Milan, the Church's emergence from the catacombs, the building of great basilicas such as St John Lateran and St Peter's, and the Council of Nicaea. Constantine planned much of it, and Sylvester let events unfold rather than assert his own authority. His feast is December 31. Light a free candle for the turning of the year and for new beginnings. St Sylvester, pray for us.
