St Stephen, the first martyr
1 candle lit
St Stephen was one of seven men chosen to serve the first Christians in Jerusalem, a man the Acts of the Apostles calls "filled with faith and the holy Spirit". He spoke boldly of Jesus and was thrown out of the city and stoned. As he died he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit", and asked God not to hold the sin against his killers. A young man named Saul, later St Paul, was there. He is honoured as the first martyr. His feast is December 26. Light a free candle for deacons, for those who forgive and for anyone suffering for their faith. St Stephen, pray for us.
