St Stephen was the first king of Hungary, crowned around the year 1000 with a crown that tradition says Pope Sylvester II sent him. Baptized as a boy, he worked all his reign to bring his people to the Christian faith, founding dioceses and monasteries and caring for the poor. He died in 1038, and in 1083 he was declared a saint together with his son, St Emeric. He is the patron of Hungary. His feast is August 16.
