St Sixtus II and Companions, Martyrs
1 candle lit
Sixtus II was elected pope in August 257, during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Valerian. He was put to death in Rome on August 6, 258, together with four of his deacons. A letter from St Cyprian, written within a month, reports the news. His own deacon, St Lawrence, followed him in martyrdom a few days later. Britannica counts him among the most venerated martyrs of the early Church. Their feast is August 7. Light a free candle for the Church's leaders and for all who suffer for their faith. Sts Sixtus and companions, pray for us.
