St Sebastian, Martyr of Rome
1 candle lit
Sebastian was a Roman martyr of the late third century, buried on the Appian Way. Tradition says he joined the Roman army to help fellow Christians without being suspected, and that under the emperor Diocletian he survived being shot with arrows, then spoke boldly to the emperor again and was beaten to death. Historians know little beyond his martyrdom. He is a patron of athletes. His feast is January 20. Light a free candle for anyone who needs courage to stand by their friends. St Sebastian, pray for us.
