St Scholastica, Sister of St Benedict

1 candle lit

Scholastica (about 480 to 542) was the twin sister of St Benedict. She founded a community of women near Monte Cassino, about five miles from her brother's monastery, and the two met only once a year, at a farmhouse. Pope Gregory the Great tells that on their last visit she asked Benedict to stay the night. He refused, so she prayed, and a thunderstorm kept him there. Three days later she died, and Benedict saw her soul rise to heaven like a dove. Her feast is February 10. Light a free candle for a sister or a brother. St Scholastica, pray for us.
