St Romuald, founder of the Camaldolese
1 candle lit
St Romuald was born around 950 and died in 1027. As a young man he was horrified when his father killed a relative in a quarrel over property. He became a monk, and his father later became one too, wavered, and was held to his vows by his son's encouragement. Romuald founded monasteries and hermitages across Italy. The most famous is Camaldoli in Tuscany, where the Camaldolese Benedictines began, joining shared monastic life with the life of a hermit. His feast is June 19. Light a free candle for those seeking quiet and silence. St Romuald, pray for us.
