St Robert Bellarmine, Doctor of the Church
1 candle lit
Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 in Montepulciano, Italy, and joined the Jesuits in 1560. His short catechism of 1597 was used for generations. Made a cardinal in 1599, he asked that the office bring him no personal gain, and he gave to the poor. Late in life he stepped back from his offices and lived among the novices as a simple religious. He died in Rome on September 17, 1621, and was named a Doctor of the Church in 1931. His feast is September 17. Light a free candle for teachers of the faith. St Robert Bellarmine, pray for us.
