St Raymond of Penyafort, Dominican Canon Lawyer
1 candle lit
Raymond of Penyafort was a nobleman with doctorates in canon and civil law who joined the Dominicans at 41. Pope Gregory IX called him to Rome to be his confessor and to gather the Church's decrees into one collection, the Decretals. He also wrote a handbook to help confessors guide penitents with care. Elected head of the Dominicans, he walked to visit the friars, then resigned at 65. He died in 1275 and is a patron of lawyers. His feast is January 7. Light a free candle for anyone who works with the law or longs for fairness. St Raymond, pray for us.
