St Polycarp of Smyrna
1 candle lit
Polycarp (about 69 to 155) was bishop of Smyrna and a disciple of St John the Apostle. The churches of Asia Minor sent him to Rome to talk with Pope Anicetus about the date of Easter. Only one of his own letters survives, written to the Church of Philippi. At the age of 86 he was brought into the crowded stadium of Smyrna and died a martyr. The account of his death is the earliest fully reliable one we have of a Christian martyr. His feast is February 23. Light a free candle for the elderly. St Polycarp, pray for us.
