Giuseppe Sarto was born in 1835, the second of ten children in a poor Italian family, and became Pope Pius X in 1903 at the age of 68. He is remembered for encouraging frequent Holy Communion, especially for children, and for sheltering refugees at his own expense after the Messina earthquake. He disliked papal pomp and said, "I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor." He died in 1914 and was canonized in 1954. His feast is August 21.
