St Pius V, the pope of Trent and Lepanto
1 candle lit
St Pius V was a Dominican, born in 1504, who became pope in 1566. His task was to carry out the reforms of the Council of Trent. He founded seminaries for training priests and published a new missal, breviary and catechism. In 1571 he organized the fleet that won the naval victory at Lepanto. People remember that he kept wearing his Dominican habit as pope, and that he gave money from papal banquets to the poor. He died in 1572. His feast is April 30. Light a free candle for those preparing for the priesthood. St Pius V, pray for us.
