St Philip Neri, Founder of the Oratory

1 candle lit

Philip Neri was born in Florence in 1515 and left a business career for Rome. For thirteen years he served the poor as a layman, then was ordained a priest at his confessor's urging. He founded the Oratory, a community with afternoon talks, hymns and prayers. He was known for humility and gaiety, using humor to gently expose pretense, and he led groups to visit churches with music and a picnic on the way. He died in 1595. His feast is May 26.
