St Peter Damian, Cardinal and Doctor

Peter Damian was orphaned young, and an older brother paid for his education. He gave up teaching for a life of prayer with the Benedictine hermits at Fonte Avellana, where he became abbot. Named cardinal bishop of Ostia, he worked to end the buying and selling of church offices and to renew the clergy. He died of a fever in 1072 while monks prayed around him. Pope Leo XII named him a Doctor of the Church in 1828. His feast is February 21. Light a free candle for anyone working to renew what has grown tired. St Peter Damian, pray for us.
