St Peter Claver, Servant of Enslaved Africans
1 candle lit
Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit who went to Cartagena, in Colombia, a major slave port. He was ordained in 1616 and trained under Alonso de Sandoval, who served enslaved Africans. When he made his final vows in 1622 he signed himself the slave of the Africans forever. He met the arriving ships with food, medicine and the sacraments, and sources estimate he baptised some 300,000 people. He died on September 8, 1654. His feast is September 9. Light a free candle for victims of slavery and trafficking. St Peter Claver, pray for us.
