St Peter Chrysologus, Doctor of the Church
1 candle lit
Peter was born in Imola, Italy, and became archbishop of Ravenna around 433. He was a close friend of Pope St Leo the Great. His sermons were short and clear, spoken for ordinary people, and he was later given the name Chrysologus, which means golden word. A collection of 176 sermons survives, though some may not be his. He died around 450 in Imola, and Pope Benedict XIII named him a Doctor of the Church in 1729. His feast is July 30. Light a free candle for preachers and for anyone searching for the right words. St Peter Chrysologus, pray for us.
