St Paulinus of Nola, bishop and friend of the poor
1 candle lit
St Paulinus was born near Bordeaux in 354, the son of the Roman prefect of Gaul, and became a lawyer and a public official. After he and his wife Therasia lost their baby son, who lived only a week, they chose a life of simplicity and gave away most of what they owned. He became a priest and then bishop of Nola near Naples for about 21 years, known for his charity to the poor. He was a friend of Augustine, Jerome and Ambrose. He died on 22 June 431. His feast is June 22. Light a free candle for grieving parents. St Paulinus, pray for us.
