St Pancras of Rome, martyr

1 candle lit

St Pancras is one of the early martyrs of Rome. He was buried on the Via Aurelia, and the church built over his grave in the fourth century still stands, though altered. He appears in Roman calendars of the fifth century. The story of his martyrdom is a later legend, and we cannot be sure whether he died under Valerian or Diocletian. What is certain is how long people have prayed at his grave. His feast is May 12. Light a free candle for the many believers whose names history has lost. St Pancras, pray for us.
