Matthias is the apostle chosen to take the place of Judas. After the Ascension, Peter said the new apostle must have been with Jesus from his baptism by John until the Ascension, and be a witness to the Resurrection. Two men were put forward, Matthias and Joseph called Barsabbas. The group prayed, drew lots, and Matthias was counted with the Eleven. The Bible names him only in this one passage, in Acts.
