St Matthew, Tax Collector and Evangelist
1 candle lit
Matthew was a Jewish tax collector who worked for the Roman occupiers, and such men were generally hated by their own people. Jesus called him, and Matthew got up and followed him. He then held a party at his house for tax collectors and others known as sinners. When the Pharisees objected, Jesus answered that he came to call sinners, not the righteous. The story is told in the ninth chapter of the first Gospel, which carries his name. His feast is September 21. Light a free candle for anyone who needs a fresh start. St Matthew, pray for us.
