St Martin I, Pope and Martyr
1 candle lit
Martin I became pope in 649 and held a council at the Lateran that rejected the teaching that Christ has no human will. Emperor Constans II sent troops to seize him, and Martin, offered no resistance and was taken to Constantinople. He was imprisoned and badly mistreated, and was spared execution when the patriarch pleaded for his life. He died at Cherson in the Crimea on September 16, 655. He is the last early pope honored as a martyr. His feast is April 13. Light a free candle for the imprisoned and all who suffer for the truth. St Martin, pray for us.
