St Maria Goretti, Martyr of Forgiveness
1 candle lit
Maria Goretti was born in 1890 to a poor farming family in Italy and grew up helping her mother work the land. At eleven she was attacked by a young neighbour, Alessandro Serenelli, and she died the next day, on 6 July 1902. Before she died she forgave him and said she wanted him with her in paradise. He later repented, begged her mother's forgiveness and lived out his life as a religious brother. Pope Pius XII declared her a saint in 1950. Her feast is July 6. Light a free candle for forgiveness and for the young. St Maria Goretti, pray for us.
