Margaret was born around 1045 outside Scotland and became its queen when she married King Malcolm at Dunfermline in 1070. She encouraged the arts and education, supported church reform, and with her husband founded churches. She was devoted to the poor, and it is said she fed nine orphans and 24 adults before she ate her own meals. She died on 16 November 1093, four days after Malcolm was killed in a surprise attack. Her feast is November 16. Light a free candle for mothers and for those who feed the hungry. St Margaret, pray for us.
