St Luke, Physician and Evangelist

1 candle lit

Luke was a Gentile, the only non-Jewish writer among the Gospel authors, and Paul calls him the beloved physician. He joined Paul on his second journey, stayed at Philippi for several years and was a faithful companion on the voyage to Rome. He wrote the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, which stress mercy, prayer, joy and care for the poor. Tradition says he came from Antioch. His feast is October 18. Light a free candle for doctors, surgeons and everyone who is ill. St Luke, pray for us.
