St Louis IX, King of France
1 candle lit
Louis IX became king of France as a boy in 1226 and was remembered for his justice and his reforms of royal government. His friend Jean de Joinville wrote a famous account of his life. He led two crusades, and his last one, in 1270, was aimed at Tunis. He died of disease there on August 25, 1270, and Pope Boniface VIII canonised him in 1297. He remains the only king of France to be declared a saint. His feast is August 25. Light a free candle for those who govern and for fairness in public life. St Louis, pray for us.
