St Leo the Great was Pope from 440 until his death in 461, and one of the greatest bishops Rome has known. His letter to Flavian, read at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, taught clearly that Christ is true God and true man, and the bishops there declared that Peter had spoken through Leo. In 452 he met Attila the Hun near Mantua and persuaded him to turn back from Italy. Almost 100 of his sermons survive, and in 1754 he was named a Doctor of the Church. His feast is November 10.
