Lawrence of Brindisi was born in southern Italy in 1559 and joined the Capuchins in 1575. He was a gifted linguist who mastered Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac and several modern languages, and he preached across Europe, including to Jews at the request of the pope. He also served as chaplain to an imperial army fighting the Turks. He died in Portugal in 1619, on his birthday, and Pope John XXIII named him a Doctor of the Church in 1959. His feast is July 21.
