St Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr of Rome
1 candle lit
Lawrence was a deacon of Rome in the third century, serving Pope Sixtus II and caring for the Church's alms. Four days after the pope was executed, Lawrence was martyred too, in 258. Tradition says that when the Roman prefect demanded the Church's treasure, Lawrence brought the poor, the sick and the orphaned and called them its treasure. Tradition adds that he was roasted on a gridiron and calmly told his executioners to turn him over. His feast is August 10. Light a free candle for the poor and those who serve them. St Lawrence, pray for us.
