St Joseph Calasanz, Teacher of the Poor
1 candle lit
Joseph Calasanz was born in Spain in 1556 and went to Rome as a priest in 1592. There he saw poor children on the streets with no chance to learn, and in 1597 he opened a free school in the Trastevere district, remembered as the first free public school in Europe. He founded the Piarists, the Order of the Pious Schools, and it was approved in 1621. He faced opposition in his later years and died in Rome in 1648. His feast is August 25. Light a free candle for teachers and for children who cannot get to school. St Joseph Calasanz, pray for us.
