St Josaphat Kuntsevych was born around 1580 in Volodymyr, in today's Ukraine, and baptized John. He became a Basilian monk in Vilnius in 1604 and, in 1618, Archbishop of Polotsk, an Eastern Catholic bishop who gave his life for the unity of Eastern Christians with Rome. He preached, taught the faith and renewed his clergy. On 12 November 1623 a mob killed him in Vitebsk. Pope Pius IX canonized him in 1867, the first saint of the Eastern Churches canonized by Rome. His feast is November 12. Light a free candle for Christian unity. St Josaphat, pray for us.
