St John XXIII, Pope

1 candle lit

John XXIII was born on 25 November 1881 into a farming family in Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo in northern Italy. He served as a papal diplomat and became pope in 1958. He opened the Second Vatican Council and took part in efforts to ease the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. He avoided the spotlight, stayed proud of his down to earth roots, and was known for his wit. He died on 3 June 1963 and was canonized in 2014. His feast is October 11. Light a free candle for peace and for farming families. St John XXIII, pray for us.
