St John of the Cross was born to a poor family in Castile in 1542 and became a Carmelite priest. With St Teresa of Avila he worked to renew the Carmelite order, and for this he was shut in a small cell in Toledo for months, where he wrote some of his most beautiful poems. His Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night tell of the soul's journey to union with God. He died in 1591 and was named a Doctor of the Church in 1926. His feast is December 14.
