St John of Kanty of Kraków
1 candle lit
John was born in 1390 and became a professor of theology in Kraków, Poland. He was sent for a time to a parish in Olkusz, then returned to Kraków to teach Scripture. He was generous to the city's poor, lived humbly, and made pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome, carrying his own luggage on his back. Told to look after his health, he replied that the desert fathers lived long despite harsh lives. He died on 24 December 1473. His feast is December 23. Light a free candle for students and teachers. St John, pray for us.
