St John of God, Servant of the Sick
1 candle lit
John of God was born in Portugal in 1495 and worked as a shepherd and a soldier. After hearing the preacher John of Avila in Granada, he gave away his possessions, and some thought him mad. He found his calling in caring for the sick and poor. He rented a house for them and carried those who could not walk on his own shoulders. He died in Granada on March 8, 1550, and is a patron of hospitals, the sick and nurses. His feast is March 8. Light a free candle for the sick and those who care for them. St John of God, pray for us.
