John was born in Damascus around 676 and followed his father into a government post under Arab rule before becoming a monk at St Sabas near Jerusalem. He defended the veneration of holy images against the iconoclasts and wrote the Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, a summary of the Greek Fathers. His hymns and sermons, make him one of the two greatest poets of the Eastern Church. He died around 749. His feast is December 4. Light a free candle for those who pray before holy images.
