St John of Ávila, preacher of Andalusia

St John of Ávila was a Spanish priest, born around 1500 in Castile. When his parents died and left him a large fortune, he gave it to the poor. He planned to be a missionary in Mexico, but the archbishop of Seville persuaded him to stay and preach in Andalusia. He became a gifted preacher, founded the University of Baeza, and counted Ignatius of Loyola and Teresa of Ávila among his friends. He died in 1569 and became a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
